What’s in Your Air?

The Aero Select was employed to sample aerosol particles in the air at a semi-rural site in the USA, and SEM images of particles in the aerosol samples were subsequently obtained by the RJ-Lee Group. The images show the complex morphology and chemical composition of particles in the air that we breathe every day.

Generating aerosols from diamond powder using the Aerosoliser

The Aerosoliser uses a vibrating jet method to generate aerosols from a powdered material. This is a much gentler method than is used in other similar instruments and one of the main advantages is the very small amount of material required.

Long-term exposure to atmospheric aerosols containing lead

Atmospheric aerosol particles were sampled using an Aero Select in a semi-rural environment at the University of Kent near Canterbury in the UK. The aim of the project was to study how lead is distributed in the atmosphere.

Aero Select in Iceland during the volcanic eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in 2010

The Aero Select wide-range aerosol sampler was employed to sample and fractionate aerosols generated during the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in 2010. This event, although relatively small for volcanic eruptions, caused enormous disruption to air travel across Europe over a period of several days in April 2010.

Raman Spectroscopy

Raman spectroscopy has been performed on sample collected by the Aero Select using an Ocean Optics portable handheld Raman Spectrometer. This is a useful technique for the characterisation of many organic and inorganic compounds, for example Carbon Nanotubes, which may be present in an aerosol sample.

The MR250 Mass Reader

The mass-size distribution of aerosol particles is normally obtained by gravimetrical analysis using microbalances. This is a very time consuming and labour intensive procedure especially when the samples only contain very small amounts of material.

Welding Facility in USA

Airborne particles in the size range from 2nm to 30μm were sampled using the Aero Select at a flow rate of 20 l/min at a welding facility in the USA. By analysing the amount of substance of interest in each of the size bins it was possible to derive the mass size distribution over the entire particle size range.

NPS500 Comparitive Measurements at NPL

A comparison performed at the UK’s National Physical Laboratory reveals a good agreement between the NPS500; the first truly portable and user-friendly nanoparticle spectrometer (SMPS type), and a reference SMPS instrument.
